Mapping the World Through Scent

Scent Atlas is a living map and journal of the smells that shape our experience of place.

It helps people discover places through scent, explore observations recorded by others, and document their own encounters with the world around them.

A different kind of map

Most maps tell us where to go. Scent Atlas helps us notice what a place feels like once we arrive.

Explore scents already recorded on the map, find nearby places, or follow Collections organized around a neighborhood, theme, season, or journey. Each observation offers a different way to experience a place—through salt air, wet pavement, flowers, food, smoke, industry, or something harder to name.

You can also add your own observations and contribute to the shared atlas.

Why scent?

Scent is closely connected to memory, emotion, culture, weather, and everyday life, yet it is rarely documented.

The smell of a place can reveal what is growing nearby, what is being cooked, how the weather is changing, or how people live and work there. It can also disappear as neighborhoods, businesses, and landscapes change.

Scent Atlas creates a record of these often-overlooked details.

It is not limited to pleasant smells or fragrance destinations. It includes the full olfactory world: natural and manufactured, beautiful and strange, lasting and temporary.
